Middle School Curriculum
Electives
In addition to the core curriculum, OLL middle school students have an extensive array of electives from which to choose, including tri-mester long courses such as Lego Robotics, cooking, drama, study skills, writing, technology, year-book, and many more.
Spanish Language
The middle school Spanish Language program is equivalent to a first year high school Spanish program. Students are taught first-year Spanish over the course of two years. The program goal is for OLL graduates to be qualified to enter into second year Spanish at the high school of their choice.
Mathematics
First year algebra is the standard middle school mathematics program at OLL. Students are taught first year algebra over the course of two years. The program goal is for students with an aptitude in math to be able to enter into advanced algebra the high school of their choice. Others will have had an introduction to algebra that will provide them a solid base for success in all high school math.
As always, some students will need extra help and some will learn quickly. Every effort is made to meet individual student needs through extra study sessions, one-on-one after school help from the teacher, and projects that will both strengthen skills and provide extra challenges for those who are ready.
Learning: A Process and a Goal
Educational opportunities abound in each curricular offering. Teaching strategies include differentiated instructional methods, cooperative learning, concept attainment, integrated thematic units, team teaching, hands-on learning, multi-age projects, independent research, and real life applications structured to meet the needs, talents and abilities of all learners.
Communication skills, team work, use of technology, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are emphasized in order to prepare students for success in the 21st Century. One-on-one or small group tutoring is available for those students with physical or learning needs that require additional help. Diagnostic testing is available through the public schools, ESD, and qualified professionals in private practice. School staff members frequently work in tandem with specialists outside the school and with parents to jointly plan the most appropriate strategies for each individual child.
Student Growth
Our Lady of Lourdes provides guidance and encouragement in the areas of personal, social, and spiritual growth within an atmosphere of Christian community. From this experience, it is hoped that each child will come to understand how to apply the Catholic value system to his or her way of life.
Parent Involvement
Finally, Our Lady of Lourdes invites parents to become actively involved in working with school personnel to maximize their child's educational opportunities. Since parents are the first and primary teachers of their own children, it is important that a cooperative relationship be established between home and school, with the child's best interest being the primary goal.
