Coronavirus Update

This has been an unprecedented time for all of us filled with much uncertainty and some anxiety. As many of you know, Governor Inslee recently announced the prohibition of large gatherings which was followed by many counties ordering the cancellation or rescheduling of small events. Following that was the closure of larger school districts in our state and in Oregon.

Today, by the proclamation of the Governor, all public and private schools in the state of Washington will remain closed through April 24th. This closure includes any planned school events such as field trips, sports practices, and any other group or club gathering. During this time, school buildings will not be open to children, parents, or community members. LEAP will also be closed.

This decision has not been made lightly. We recognize the hardship this places on families; at the same time, we must listen to the advice of experts in their field for the common good. Our government leaders urge us to take these steps now to slow the spread of this global pandemic. Our Catholic faith compels us to consider and protect those most vulnerable in our society.

As of now, the plan is to return to school on 4/27. However, this is a complex and evolving situation. We will monitor it closely and inform you of updates as they arise. This is not meant to be an extended vacation, so we will be following the school’s calendar using a distance-learning format until Spring Break (3/30-4/3) and resuming our academics using the same distance-learning format on April 6th. Each student will need to take attendance with their homeroom teacher by 9 am each school day. In addition to this letter, you will receive an initial email from teachers with attendance instructions, daily plans, and expectations. We will also be posting links so that families are able to watch the weekly Celebration of the Eucharist.

3rd-trimester work and grades will begin as scheduled on Monday, 3/16. Please be patient with the sending of report cards. With much of their hard work focused on putting together a distance-learning format, I’ve given the teachers an extension on completing them. However, you can still access your students’ grades through your FACTS Family account.

Conferences were also calendared for 3/19 and 3/20. We are still in the process of evaluating how we should reschedule or revise the format so please look for future communication regarding spring conferences. They will no longer be held this coming week.

We recognize that moving to digital learning next week requires students to have devices. Should you have no personal access to a device and wish to check one out, we will need you to come to the school to do so ​(you will need to have your own charging cord).​ ​The front office will be open for this purpose on Monday, 3/16 from 8:30 am-12:00 pm. The school library will also be open during this time for any students who wish to check out books.

Checking out an iPad or Chromebook acknowledges that you take responsibility for the use, care, and condition of the device. Use of the Chromebook requires students to follow the Technology Agreement they signed back in the fall. Additionally, similar to a library book, should the device be damaged during your check out time, you will assume responsibility for replacement. Our replacement cost is $280 to cover the purchase of a new device and the expense for us to put it back on our network. Contracts will be on campus this Monday for those in need.

Please know we are doing our very best to make decisions in some unique and uncharted circumstances. We’re hopeful that the duration of this is limited to the published dates, but ask that everyone in our community pray as we continue to navigate the days ahead. We’ll be communicating with updates as we receive them. We look forward to seeing all of our students and families back at school as soon as possible.
